Sanur Harbour is Bali's busiest fast-boat port and the main gateway to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. The purpose-built jetty (opened in 2022) replaced the old beach-launch and made boarding far easier, with frequent daily departures from early morning.
Boats run year-round, but the calmest seas and best snorkelling visibility are in the dry season, April to October:
Good to know: Crossings can be bumpier in the December–February wet season — choose a morning departure for calmer seas, and take motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it. Boats occasionally delay or reschedule in rough weather; we build in buffer time so an island day trip never clashes with your flight home.
Padang Bai is a pretty fishing-village bay on Bali's east coast and the main departure point for the Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno and Air) and Lombok. Both the speedy tourist fast boats and the slower public ferry leave from here, so it suits every budget.
Fast boat vs ferry: The tourist fast boats are far quicker and run hotel-to-island transfers, ideal if you're heading to the Gilis for a few nights. The public ferry is much cheaper and carries vehicles, but is slow and basic — best only if you're on a tight budget or taking a car to Lombok.
The Bali–Gili–Lombok crossing is best in the dry season, April to October, when the channel is calmest. December to February can be choppy:
The three Gili Islands are car-free — you get around by bicycle or horse cart (cidomo). Gili Trawangan is the liveliest with beach bars and nightlife, Gili Air is the laid-back middle ground, and Gili Meno is the quietest and most romantic. All three have superb snorkelling, sea turtles, and powder-white beaches just a short hop apart.
Serangan (Turtle Island), just south of Benoa, is a sheltered harbour used by several fast-boat operators to Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. Its proper jetty and calm, protected loading make boarding gentler than open-beach launches — a good pick for families, older travellers and anyone prone to seasickness.
The dry season (April–October) gives the calmest seas and best visibility. December–February crossings can be bumpier, so take morning boats and motion-sickness tablets.

Benoa Harbour (Pelabuhan Benoa) is Bali's main deep-water port. International cruise liners dock here, and it is also the departure point for the island's best-known day, sunset and dinner cruises — Bali Hai, Bounty and others — heading out to Nusa Lembongan and along the south coast.
A short flight east of Bali, Labuan Bajo on Flores is the gateway to Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Traditional phinisi liveaboards and speedboat day trips head out to see Komodo dragons, the famous panorama of Padar Island, Pink Beach and the manta rays — Bali's ultimate boat add-on.

April to October (the dry season) is the best time for Komodo — calm seas, clear water and reliable boat schedules. Manta rays are seen year-round but are especially active around the dry months. Avoid January–February, when rougher seas can cancel crossings and some boats pause operations.
Around Bali itself, diving and snorkelling at Tulamben, Amed, Padang Bai, Menjangan and the Nusa islands is best from April to November, when visibility is highest and seas are calm. Mola mola (sunfish) season around Nusa Penida runs roughly July–October; manta rays are a year-round highlight.
Day boats from Sanur, Serangan and Padang Bai can often be booked a day or two ahead, but Komodo liveaboards and the better phinisi cruises sell out weeks in advance, especially July–September.
