Watching the sun rise over a volcanic caldera with a cup of hot tea in hand — the Mount Batur sunrise trek is one of Bali's most memorable experiences. Here is everything you need to plan it.
Mount Batur Quick Facts
- Summit: 1,717 m
- Difficulty: moderate (2-hour climb)
- Cost: ₹3,000–4,500 pp
- Start: ~2am (sunrise ~6am)
What to Expect
You will be picked up from your hotel around 2am, drive to the trailhead near Kintamani, and hike about two hours in the dark to reach the summit before sunrise. The reward: panoramic views over Lake Batur and, on a clear day, Mount Agung and Lombok's Rinjani in the distance.
Difficulty & Who Can Do It
It is a moderate climb — steep in places but manageable for reasonably fit beginners. Go with a licensed guide (mandatory), take it at your own pace, and you will be fine.
What to Wear & Bring
- Layers — it is cold at the top before sunrise (10–15°C)
- Sturdy trainers or hiking shoes
- Headtorch (often provided), water and snacks
- A light jacket and a power bank for photos
Tip: Pair the trek with a Kintamani caldera viewpoint breakfast and a coffee-plantation stop on the way back to Ubud. Best in the dry season — see the best time to visit.
